Captain Jim Ellis, is a 13th generation Cape Codder who has fished and hunted relentlessly since a young boy. He started fishing the kettle and mud ponds of the Cape for trout and large and smallmouth bass. Also early on he was mentored by his father, grandfathers and numerous uncles in the many outdoor activities available on the Cape back in the 60's. He was especially fond of his days spent with his Grandfather on his skiff in Bass River chasing stripers. This is where he first became interested in fly fishing the salt. Soon thereafter many jaunts both on foot and boat to the beaches, estuaries and saltwater flats of lower Cape Cod Bay began. An intimate memory and knowledge of those waters still remains. Clamming, duck hunting and striper fishing these waters for 40 some years has allowed Capt. Jim to know them like few others. A USCG Masters License was obtained by Jim in 1996 and a guiding career began. Stripers, bluefish were the targets initially. Soon thereafter he began to chase false albacore, spanish mackeral, atlantic bonito and school bluefin tuna. The Captain has been an avid fly tyer since about 8 years of age. He is credited with several original patterns for the salt and has been featured in several fly tying books, including: Saltwater Flies of the Northeast by Angelo Peluso Tying Contemporary Saltwater Flies by David Klausmeyer Striped Bass Flies:Patterns of the Pros by David Klausmeyer Custom saltwater flies are available by special order. Jim has also been featured in numerous publications including Flyfishing in Saltwaters, Saltwater Fly Fishing, Sport Fishing, Saltwater Sportsman, American Angler, Fly Tyer, Outdoor Life and Fly Fish America.
